Grass fed beef: the facts

Different cattle rearing systems have several advantages and disadvantages, resulting in different qualities of meats. It can be difficult to figure out which type you should purchase for the healthiest meal. Most cows are fed primarily on some sort of forage, often grass; this is thought to be the best method for both animal and human.

There are artificial practices in place in some industrial production systems, and this can affect production time as well as quality of meat produced. The first thing to note is that grass fed meats are higher in nutrients and lower in saturated fats than other types of meat, making them a healthier part of your diet.

If you really want pure beef, look for organic grass fed beef. There has been much confusion over the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’, and it is more complicated than just the type of beef. Organic grass fed beef refers to the meat produced from cattle which have been raised on grass, but have not been given any artificial chemicals. This includes pesticides in the grass too.

Numerous sources state that the best meat comes from cows which eat grass and not grains. However, despite scientific evidence showing that cow stomachs struggle to process grain naturally, some farms feed them this to fatten them up quickly.

Grass fed beef usually has less saturated fat than grain fed beef. So it all adds up that grass fed beef is the type to go for, and if you’re really worried about harmful substances, look for organic grass fed meats.
